It is from those verses that we learn that everything from thorns and thistles to death are abnormalities that were not a part of God’s original creation but came in as a result of sin. As we come to these final verses of chapter 3 we come to the conclusion of the account of the fall of man. I. Adam called his wife Eve- a. Eve means life or living. b. Adam believed God’s promise. c. Adam and Eve will be in heaven. II. Man has become like one of US- a. Notice God’s reference to himself as US. b. Man was not created with the capacity to handle the knowledge of evil. c. God puts a limit on the spread and duration of evil. Man is barred from the tree of life. III. Man expelled from the garden- a. Fellowship with God is now altered. b. The presence of God is no longer immediate. c. Man now subjected to the cruelty of a cursed creation. IV. Clothed by God- a. They sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. b. God made tunics of skin and clothed them. c. Tunics of skin imply the death of an animal. “Up to this point no one had died. Adam and Eve had sinned. They must have expected death as the immediate penalty for their sin. When God came to them in the garden they must have shivered at the prospect of this judgment. But they did not die (though their spirits died, which they showed by attempting to run away from God when He called them). In fact, not even the serpent died. Up to this point there had been no death at all. And now, the death that occurs is not their death, though they richly deserved it, but the death of innocent animals- lambs. And the one who killed those animals was God. Boice d. The fig leaves though real, symbolized man’s attempt to cover his own sin and to put forth his own efforts as a means of acceptance with God. e. The tunics showed two things: 1. Sin must be atoned by the shedding of innocent blood, or to put it in strictly Biblical terms, without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. 2. Acceptance with God is based on his terms not ours. “In the last analysis there really are only two religions, whatever nation, tribe, place or period of history you consider. There is the religion of fig leaves, the religion of works. Or there is the religion of skins, the religion of God’s provision through the death of Christ. Most people come to God with fig leaves. They may not be much; but they are something they have done for themselves, and they want God to recognize them…This is precisely what God will not accept”. Boice f. This is exactly what Paul meant when he wrote these words to the church in Philippi. “But what things were gain to me these I have counted loss for Christ. Indeed I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.” Close: The words to the great hymn, On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand, sum it all up- My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne &Э1T+ N ј љ jox~ЯЅЈЊ§њ§§§§њїњїѕїёї§6CJ5CJCJCJЏАЭЮыь 01TU‚ЬЭ* + N O v w І Ї с т §ћћћљћћћћћћћљћћћћћћћљћћћћћћћЏАЭЮыь 01TU‚ЬЭ* + N O v w І Ї с т і ї 8 9 g h ˜ ™ š › œ љ џ ‘ ’ Г Д S§њїєёюышхњтпмйжгањтпЭЪЧФСЛИЕВЏЌЉСІЃ š—’ˆƒ~.ќџџ/ќџџPќџџQќџџтќџџуќџџщ§џџFџџџGџџџHџџџIџџџzџџџ{џџџЉџџџЊџџџыџџџьџџџ IџџџJџџџ„џџџ… А"А# $ %А i4@ёџ4NormalCJOJPJQJmH 0`0 Heading 1$@&54`4 Heading 2$@&5CJ<A@ђџЁ<Default Paragraph Font(>`ђ(Title$a$5*B`* Body TextCJЊ " џџџџ џџ z™ џџ z™ џџ z™œЈ Њ ]Њ т xЊ SЊ љўj o Ќ = A P R Ќ ::џџ- -^Macintosh HD:Users:brianbrodersen:Documents:Microsoft User Data:AutoRecovery save of Document1- -<Macintosh HD:Users:brianbrodersen:Desktop:Clothed by God.docџ@€Ї Ї ќ|lЇ Ї у#Њ р @GTimes New Roman5€Symbol3 Arial3Times qˆ№аhР{Ъfl|Ъfj|ЪfЂљD щ№ЅРДД€>0е Ъ №џџClothed by God- -ўџ р…ŸђљOhЋ‘+'Гй0h˜АМШдф №ќ $ 0 <HPX`'Clothed by GodolotlotlotNormal - -1-Microsoft Word 10.1@L’Ё@ќсџ'/Щ@АO^/Щ@ˆhG(/ЩљD ўџ еЭеœ.“—+,љЎ0ф `hpx€ ˆ˜  Ј У'е Clothed by God Title ўџџџўџџџ ! Document.8
