The Events: Creation, The Fall, The Flood, and the Dispersion at Babel. The Men: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. As we follow along in the history of redemption we come now to the life of Abraham or Abram as he was originally called. Abraham is the father of the Jewish nation as well as the father of the Christian faith. A mythological version of Abraham was invented and developed by Islam but historically there is no connection between Abraham and Islam. I make this point because we often hear that Abraham is the father of the three great monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Abraham lived approximately 2000 B.C. 3 to 5 hundred years after the flood. With Abram an entirely new period may be said to begin. He was to be the ancestor of a new race in whom the Divine promises were to be preserved, and through whom they would finally be realized. Abram is a Mesopotamian or Babylonian from the city of Ur (in modern day Iraq). The city was named after the ancient moon-god and was the very center of Babylonian moon worship. According to Joshua 24:2 Abrams ancestors including his father Terah worshiped other gods, most probably the moon-god. Abram lived in the city of Ur at the height of its splendor. The city was a prosperous center of religion and industry. Thousands of recovered clay documents attest to thriving business activity. Excavations of the royal cemetery have revealed a surprisingly advanced culture, particularly in the arts and crafts. I. The Call and the Promises of God. II. Human Weakness and the Patience of God.
