Judea had become a dangerous place for him. The feast of Tabernacles or ingathering was a time of praise and thanksgiving at the end of the agricultural year. The feast was also a commemoration of God’s blessing upon the people while they lived in tents in the wilderness on their journey to the Promised Land. By the time of Jesus there was a spectacular ritual. Tents made of palm leaves were placed on rooftops, in courtyards and in gardens and people lived in them for the week. (This is still done by Orthodox Jews) On each day of the feast the priest would make their way down to the pool of Siloam where they would fill pitchers of water that would then be poured out on the stone steps at the base of the altar. This was done in memory of God bringing water from the rock while the children of Israel were sojourning in the wilderness. This background is important to understanding the words of Jesus on the last day of the feast. Verses 3-36 read with commentary. Verse 37-39 a. If anyone thirst. The thirst Jesus is describing is of a spiritual nature. It means anxiety of soul, conviction of sin, longing after peace of conscience, the sense that there has to be something more than rituals and religion have to offer, a longing to know and experience God. b. Come to me and drink- Jesus calls men to himself, not to rituals, not to works, not to religion. Come to me all you who labor and heavily burdened… c. Rivers of living water / Holy Spirit - As the Scripture has said… “You shall be like a spring of water, who’s waters do not fail’. Isa 58:11 Not only does Christ satisfy us personally, He flows from our lives to others bringing them life.
