Abraham was first drawn out of the world- Genesis 12 Abraham was then drawn into the covenant- Genesis 15 God will now draw Abraham into the deepest aspect of fellowship, the fellowship of suffering- Genesis 22 I. God tested Abraham regarding his most precious possession. Not so He could see Abrahams faith, but so we could see Abrahams faith. This was not so much a test to produce faith, as it was a test to reveal faith. God put Abraham to the supreme test so that all men might know that it is possible for a mortal man to love God above all else. II. Failure to understand this story has led many to falsely accuse God. How could God be so cruel as to require Abraham to offer up Isaac? Realize two things: 1. God never intended Abraham to actually offer Isaac. They have built high places to Baal, to burn their sons with fire as burnt offerings which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into my mind. Jer 19:5 What Abraham did was something completely unique in Gods redemptive history, given for a specific purpose once for all fulfilled. God has never since, nor would ever again direct someone to do something like this. 2. Abraham was a prophet. (In this particular instance Abraham and Isaac were unknowingly playing the roles of another Father and Son who would offer a sacrifice for sin). III. A Look at the Types- a. Only Son- Jn. 316 b. Loves first mention- Father and Son c. Three days journey- The Son of Man must suffering many things and be rejected and be killed, and be raised the third day. Lk. 9:22 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his one and only son, of whom it was said, in Isaac your seed shall be called, concluding that God was able to raise him from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. Heb. 11:17-19 d. Mt. Moriah- Now Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David. e. Isaac carries the wood- And He, bearing His own cross, went out to a place called the place of the Skull Jn. 19:17 f. Jehovah Jireh- The Lord sees, or the Lord provides. In the mountain of the Lord provision will be seen! Abraham rejoiced to see my day, he saw it and was glad Jn. 8:56 IV. The Emerging Picture- a. Look forward 2000 years and you see Jesus Christ, the one and only Son of the Father, bearing His cross to the very tip of Mt. Moriah, where He is laid upon the wood, fastened to it literally with metal spikes, and offered up as a sacrifice for the sin of the world. Abraham was kept back from plunging the knife into Isaac, but not so with Christ. The Lord laid on Him the iniquities of us all. Close: Just as Abraham prophetically declared, God did provide himself a lamb. For God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself.
