These feasts were memorials of what God had done as well as prophecies of what He would, and yet will do, in the future. In these seven feasts we have a beautiful picture of Gods redemptive work through the ages, beginning with the Passover, which spoke of Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, and ending with the feast of tabernacles, which is a picture of the glorious kingdom of God. a. The LORDS Feasts. Not Israels, but the LORDS and therefore applicable to the church. Unfortunate that the early church let go of its rich biblical heritage and substituted pagan holidays for those beautiful God appointed feasts! b. Holy convocation- formal gathering. Festive gatherings, special occasions where Gods people gathered together. God is into his people gathering together and celebrating his goodness. (Church dedication) Lets look at each of these feasts keeping our primary focus on the prophetic aspect of the feast. I. Passover/Unleavened Bread/Firstfruits Verses 5,6,9-11 a. Immediate significance- Memorial of deliverance from bondage in Egypt/Thanksgiving for the harvest to come. b. Prophecy- Death/Sinlessness/Resurrection of Christ. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Cor 5:6-8 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. 1 Cor 15:20-24 II. Feast of Weeks/Pentecost Verses 15-17 a. Immediate significance Beginning of the summer harvest. b. Prophecy- The birth of the church. Leavened bread, two loavesJew and Gentile sinners come together in one body to form the church. III. Trumpets/Day of Atonement/Tabernacles Verses 23-24,26-28,33-34,39 a. Long interval between Pentecost and Trumpets. b. Immediate significance- Trumpets, people called together for worship or battle/ Day of Atonement/Tabernacles memorial aspect. c. Prophecy- 1. Trumpets a. Gathering of Israel for Messiahs coming - Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly; Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room. Let the priests, who minister to the LORD, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?' " Joel 2:15-17 b. Gathering of church to Jesus. The Rapture! Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed-- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Cor 15:50-52 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 1 Thess 4:15-18 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this." Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. Rev 4:1-2 2. Day of Atonement/The second coming And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they have pierced; they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH. And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. Zech 3:8,9 12:10,13:1 The High Priest after the order of Melchizedek shall come forth from heaven and pronounce Israel clean, not for that year but forever! 3. The Feast of Tabernacles/The kingdom of God And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles In that day "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. The pots in the LORD's house shall be like the bowls before the altar. Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the LORD of hosts. Everyone who sacrifices shall come and take them and cook in them. In that day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts. Zech 14 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."
