Q Q Lights shining in the Darkness Matt: 5:14-16 Intro: This statement of Jesus is all the more amazing when we consider to whom it was first spoken. Not to the philosophers or the politicians, not to the poets or the theologians, not to the rich, the famous, the wise, the noble but to the common people, the simple ones who put their faith in Him. I. This statement implies - a. The world is in a state of darkness. This is indeed the teaching of scripture: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. JN 1:1-5 Jesus said to Paul; Im sending you to the gentiles to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, ACTS 26:18 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. EPH 5:8 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, COL 1:13 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1PET 2:9 b. This darkness is spiritual and moral darkness. c. Christians alone are the Light of the world. How can this be? Jesus said, I Am the Light of the world. He also said, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. Paul said, Dont you know that Jesus Christ is in you? Peter said, We have become partakers of the divine nature. II. The effects of light upon darkness. a. Light exposes darkness. b. Light drives out darkness. c. Light brings sight. d. Light guides III. Dont hide your light! IV. Let your light so shine. a. So shine - shine in such a way. b. Good works are the light that shines. c. God getting the glory Close: The Lamp a. What if the light grows dim? b. Oil - prayer, meditation on word, worship. c. Wick - Trimmed, daily judge ourselves in light of the word.
