Knowing God s word is vitally important, doing it is even more important. Many people in the church trust that because they know what the Bible says, they are okay. This is a serious mistake, and according to James, those who make it, are only deceiving themselves. According to Jesus, those who hear His words, but don t do them, are building their spiritual house on sand, the house will soon collapse, and great will be the fall. Are you building on the rock or on sand? Doing the word is to be building on the rock. Not doing is to be building on sand. Whoever hears these sayings of Mine. The context would of course be the teaching in this sermon. Let me give you a summary of what has been stated in this sermon: The sermon began with Jesus giving a description of the character of a Christian. That description began with poor in spirit and thus the Christian life begins when a man recognizes that he is spiritually bankrupt and cast himself upon the mercy of God for salvation. And then follows the remainder of the Beatitudes. Then comes the Christian s relationship to the world: The salt of the earth, the light of the world . Then the Christian s relationship to the law. He (the Christian) is to have a righteousness that exceeds that of the Scribes and Pharisees, a righteousness that springs from within. Then the Christian is to be sincere and without hypocrisy in all his spiritual activity i.e. giving, prayer, fasting. The Christian is to be heavenly minded, laying up treasures in heaven, not on earth. Knowing that no man can serve two masters, he is to be seeking first the kingdom of God and trusting God to provide for necessities. The Christian is to be righteous in all his judgments: not judging beyond God s requirements, not judging according to outward appearance, not judging self righteously, not judging mercilessly, not judging finally. The Christian is to pray persistently and expectantly. And to do to others as you would have them do to you. Close: These are the sayings, whoever does these sayings of mine, I will liken to a wise man. Being a doer is the key.
