That is because the true followers of Christ have undergone a transformation by the power of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence. Christians are not better than other people, nor are Christians morally superior to other people from the merely human standpoint. Christians are made of the same sinful material that everyone else comes from. What is the difference? Christians are those who have acknowledged that they are indeed hopeless sinners in need of a savior, have repented of theirs sins and yielded themselves to Christ who has taken up residence in our lives and is transforming us from the inside out more and more into the likeness of our heavenly father. Remember that each one of these Beatitudes is part of the overall picture of the character of each individual Christian. In other words, Christians are poor in spirit, they mourn over sin, they are meek, they hunger and thirst for righteousness and are merciful, pure in heart and peacemakers. We come to the fifth Beatitude: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. I. Every true Christian will show mercy. The words merciful and mercy in this context have to do primarily with how we deal with those who have wronged us. So the merciful are those who deal graciously with those who have wronged them. a. A Christian must be merciful and forgiving because of the mercy they’ve experienced. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward those who fear him… Ps 103:10-11 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning… Lam 3:22 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, TIT 3:4-5 b. A Christian has become a partaker of the divine nature and since it is part of God’s nature to be merciful and forgiving those who are His children will be like Him. The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin… Ex. 34:6 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy… Ps 103:8 Jesus and the lame man at the pool of Bethesda- “Do you want to be made well? Go and sin no more least a worse thing come upon you”. Jesus and the woman taken in adultery - “ Where are your accusers, has no one condemned you? Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” Jesus and Zacchaeus the greedy tax collector- Jesus and the Syro-Phonecian woman’s demon possessed child- II. Biblical examples of those who showed Mercy to others. a. Joseph with his brothers- When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him." Then his brothers went and fell down before his face, and they said, "Behold, we are your servants." Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? "But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. "Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. GEN 50 b. David toward Saul- Saul unjustly and wickedly persecuted David and sought to destroy him. When the opportunity came to avenge himself and destroy Saul, David refused to do it saying, “God forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed”. And when Saul was slain David lamented with great lamentation. 1Sam 26, 2Sam 1 c. Paul, Silas and the Philippian jailer- Paul and Silas had just been beaten and severely treated by their captors and yet when the jailer came trembling before them in fear of the great earthquake and asked “What must I do to be saved”? They treated the one who had just mistreated them with mercy saying, “believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you and your household shall be saved”. Acts 16 III. Being Merciful a. Practical application- 1. Somebody has wronged you and they come and ask forgiveness. What do you do? 2. Somebody has wronged you and has never asked forgiveness and now you have the chance to pay them back. What do you do? b. How do you do it? To be merciful and forgiving doesn’t mean that we will not be tempted with feelings of anger, bitterness, hardness etc. But it does mean that when we’re tempted we submit to God and allow Him to enable us to do what we can’t do on our own. We trust him as the ultimate judge and avenger of those who have been unjustly treated. Close: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. There’s a day coming when we are all going to need mercy, the more we’ve shown it to others the more it will be shown to us.
