The world extols the strong and powerful, the self-assured and self-confident, the assertive and aggressive, the proud and arrogant. Jesus says, blessed are the Meek! I. What is Meekness? a. Negative - Meekness is not weakness or cowardice. It is not shyness or a withdrawn personality as contrasted with that of an extrovert. Meekness cannot be reduced to mere niceness. b. Meekness – Gentle, lowly, humble, considerate, courteous. John Wycliff translated this Beatitude, “ Blessed be mild men.” In classical Greek the word was used to describe tame animals. It is strength under control. II. Biblical examples of meekness 1. Abraham- “Abraham said to Lot, Please let there be no strife between you and me… Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right: or, if you go to the right I’ll go to the left”. 2. Moses - Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. Num 12:3 a. Eldad and Medad - And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, "Moses my lord, forbid them!" Then Moses said to him, "Are you zealous for my sake? Oh, that all the LORD'S people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!" NUM 11:27-29 b. Aaron and Miriam - Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses… So they said, "Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?" And the LORD heard it. Then the LORD came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward. And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow… So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, "Please heal her, O God, I pray!" Num 12 c. Moses prays for people to be pardoned- Then the LORD said to Moses: "How long will these people reject Me…? "I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they." And Moses said to the Lord..."Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, Num 14 d. Moses’ meekness manifested in his magnanimous spirit, his mercy toward his critics, and his lack of selfish ambition. 3. David- In all his dealings with Saul never sought to avenge himself. God forbid that I should stretch forth my hand against the Lord’s anointed. 4. Jesus Christ - "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. MATT 11:28-29 a. Appearing as a man - who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. PHIL 2:6-7 b. Endured hostility from sinners - "You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. "Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. JOHN 5:33-34 c. Suffering silently - For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth"; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously… 1 PET 2:21-23 d. The meek man is not proud of himself; he does not in any sense glory in himself. He does not assert himself. He does not demand anything for himself. He does not take all his rights as claims. He does not make demands for his position, his privileges, his possessions, his status in life. He leaves everything- himself, his rights, his cause, his whole future in the hands of God. MLJ III. The Meek shall inherit earth. a. The earth is the Lords and everything in it. In the end He is going to give it to His people. Ultimately, the proud, the intimidating, the strong, the self-sufficient, the overbearing, the capable, the aggressive, and the ambitious, will have nothing. And the meek shall inherit the earth. Close: Jesus said, take my yoke upon you and learn from me- In biblical times a young ox was yoked to an older, more experienced ox so that the older might train him to perform properly. By bearing the same yoke, the untrained ox learned the proper pace and how to heed the direction of the master. We learn meekness by being yoked to Christ, who is meek and lowly in heart. And through His spirit He is making us more and more like Him. А"А# $ %А i$@ёџ$NormalmH 0@0 Heading 1$@&CJ<A@ђџЁ<Default Paragraph Font*B@ђ* Body TextCJ,>`,Title$a$5CJ $џџџџ!џџ z™ џџ z™ џџ z™h$zmt•šŸбжлр‰‹t x Г Е ў žЁшыЁЃ:::::::џџ Brian BrodersenC:\WORDDOCS\SERMONS\MOUNT3.DOC- -_Macintosh HD:Users:brianbrodersen:Documents:Microsoft User Data:AutoRecovery save of Blessed ar- -`Macintosh HD:Users:brianbrodersen:Documents:SERMONS:Sermon on the Mount:Blessed are the Meek.DOC- -`Macintosh HD:Users:brianbrodersen:Documents:SERMONS:Sermon on the Mount:Blessed are the Meek.DOC- -BMacintosh HD:Users:brianbrodersen:Desktop:Blessed are the Meek.DOCџ@€pl,# @GTimes New Roman5€Symbol3 Arial"Aˆаh(УіХ tЦЦ tЦЦGФШƒ!!„ЅРxx€>0da„џџџBlessed are the MeekBrian Brodersen- -ўџ р…ŸђљOhЋ‘+'Гй0|˜ИФмшј , 8 D P\dlt'Blessed are the Meek 1lesBrian BrodersenriaNormalr- -6-Microsoft Word 10.1@jnЎ-@N"ЁsЮШ@шKjBК@”хФsЮШФШўџ еЭеœ.“—+,љЎ0ш `hpx€ ˆ˜  Ј Щ'!a Blessed are the Meek Title ўџџџўџџџ !" Document.8
