Christs opponents even now had begun to regard him as a destructive revolutionist, an iconoclast who wanted to break every tie with the past, but these opponents of Jesus were wrong. Did the scribes and Pharisees demand good works? So did Jesus. Did they hold Moses in high regard? So did Jesus. The righteousness which he proclaimed was not anything new. It was in complete harmony with the law and the prophets that he came, not to abolish, but to fulfill. These statements of Jesus are transitional statements leading up to His exposition of the Law of Moses, that had been misinterpreted by the scribes and Pharisees. I. Law and the Prophets - a. Not to destroy (do away with) b. But to fulfill (to carry out) c. The Law - spiritual, moral, civil, ceremonial d. The permanence of the Law (till heaven and earth pass) II. Christians and the Law Only the spiritual and moral aspects of the law are relevant to N.T. believers. a. Do and Teach b. Spiritual and moral aspects of the Law all reiterated in the N.T. 1. The first and second commandments forbid idolatry, the N.T. tells us that idolaters will not inherit the kingdom of God Gal 5:20 2. The third commandment forbids the taking of the Lords name in vain, Jesus taught us to pray, Our Father hallowed be your name. 3. The fourth commandment says to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy, the N.T. tells us that Christ is our Sabbath. 4. The fifth commandment says to honor your father and mother, Ephesians 6:2 says the same thing. 5. The sixth commandment says you shall not murder Paul said, murderers will not inherit the kingdom of God. John said, no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 6. The seventh commandment says; you shall not commit adultery the New Testament says; no adulterer has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 7. The eight commandment says; you shall not steal the New Testament says; let him who stole steal no more, and that no extortioner will inherit Christs kingdom. 8. The ninth commandment says, you shall not bear false witness, Col 3:9 says, Do not lie to one another. 9. The tenth commandment says; you shall not covet the New Testament says; covetousness is idolatry 9. Lev 19:18 is quoted at least three times in the N.T. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 10. Lev 11:44 is quoted by Peter in 1 Peter 1:16, Be holy, for I am holy. Listen to Paul in Romans- For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Rom 8:3-4 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. ROM 13:8-10 III. The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. a. The scribes and Pharisees - b. Their righteousness - the best man could do, but not enough. c. The righteousness that exceeds - Philippians 3:9 Close: Are you clothed in the righteousness of Christ? !.5l 9 V 1v|CJ6CJ6CJCJ5CJ!.k l 8 9 $a$ 12DEef:1@Auv* 12DEef:1@Auv / =!"#$% i$@$NormalmH <A@<Default Paragraph Font.B@.
