Verses 15-20 are no doubt connected inasmuch as the false prophets are those religious leaders who would seek to steer people away from the narrow gate that leads to life ( which is Jesus Christ and the salvation he provides ) onto the broad road that leads to destruction. The Bible is full of both, examples of false prophets, and warnings against false prophets. Examples - OT, Jer 28 NT, Acts 13:6-11 Warnings - Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, `I am the Christ,' and will deceive many& Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. MATT 24:4-5,11 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron. 1 TIM 4:1-2 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 2 TIM 3:1-8 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. 2 PET 2:1-3 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1JN 4:1 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. JUDE 3-4 II. What is a false prophet ? A person or an organization that claims to be the representative or spokesman for God, and is not. III. False prophets are well disguised. ( sheep s clothing ) They have bibles, they quote scriptures, they claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. But they are deceivers. False prophets are deadly. ( ravenous wolves ) Eternity is at stake. How do we recognize false prophets ? ( By their fruits ) It might be helpful here to consider the marks of a true prophet or servant of the Lord and then contrast the two. Three things mark the true prophet. 1. Sound Doctrine. In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, TIT 2:7 2. Holy Living. But you, O man of God& pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 1 TIM 6:11 3. Humility: A desire to glorify God rather than self. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. 2 COR 4:5 Four marks of a false prophet: They handle the word of God dishonestly and irreverently. They corrupt the scriptures. They deny the authenticity and authority of the scriptures and put in their place the teachings of men. They deny or distort the Great Doctrines of the Christian Faith: The divinity of Christ, his virgin birth, his sinless life, his miracles, his atoning death, his bodily resurrection and ascension, and his second coming. They deny the depravity of man and his need for a savior, and teach that man is essentially good and can save himself. Some even teach that man is actually a god. They reject any teaching that would require them to live in sexual purity and scoff at the idea of a literal place called hell. 2. They live ungodly lives. They do not possess the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. But rather manifest the works of the flesh,which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; 3. Pride, self glorification. Jesus said the false prophets of his day did all of their religious activity,  to be seen of men. Paul warned the church that from within men would rise up seeking to draw away disciples after themselves. False prophets promotes themselves and their pet doctrines. The love of money. Luke 16:14 says; The Pharisees, were lovers of money. Paul said in Titus 1:11 that the false teachers, taught for dishonest gain. Peter said in 2 Pet 2:3 that the false teachers would by covetousness exploit you with deceptive words. The word translated  ravenous is literally to extort.
