The word disciple comes from the Greek word mathetes which means a learner, or a follower. It implies devotion, commitment and submission to a master. Anyone claiming to be a Christian needs to realise that implied in the word Christian is the idea of discipleship, for it was the disciples at Antioch who were first called Christians. By putting together various statements from the Gospels, we can get a clear picture of what Jesus had in mind when he used the term disciple. I. Luke 14:26-33 A disciple is someone, who having counted the cost, has decided to follow Jesus. A disciple is someone who has put Jesus first. II. John 8:31 A disciple is someone for whom the word of God is absolute, final and essential. Job summed up the disciples attitude toward the word when he said: I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. a. Meditation on the word. Psalm 1 b. Doers of the word. James 1 III. John 13:34-35 A disciple is marked by love for the people of God. A self- sacrificing love as seen in the life of Jesus. IV. John 15:8 A disciple bears much fruit. V.
