Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word. Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, You ministers of His, who do His pleasure. Bless the LORD, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Ps 103:20-22 a. Angels are part of the all things that were created by Christ. They are the invisible things that are referred to by Paul in Colossians. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. Col 1:16-17 b. The time of their creation is nowhere definitely indicated, but it is most probable that it occurred before the creation of the heavens and the earth in Genesis one. I base this on Job 38:4-7: Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy? II. The Nature of Angels. a. They are incorporeal. ministering spirits. Heb 1:7 Angels have often revealed themselves in bodily form, but this does not suggest that they have material bodies as part of their necessary existence. b. Angels are spoken of as hosts, but not as a race. Angels neither marry nor are they given in marriage, they do not reproduce. Never do we read of sons of angels. Nor do they die. Nor can they be saved. For assuredly He does not give help to Angels, but He gives help to the seed of Abraham Heb. 2:16 c. Angels are greater than man in knowledge, though not omniscient. Jesus said, But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven. Angels are stronger than man, though not omnipotent. Whereas angels who are greater in power and might2 Pet 2:11 Angels are finite like man and therefore have limitations. Angels are not omnipresent. Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth d. Names of Angels- Gabriel, hero of God. Michael, who is as God. Archangel- chief angel. III. The work of Angels. a. The work of angels in connection with the life and ministry of Christ. Gabriel to Mary, an angel communicated to Joseph, angels announced the birth of Christ, angels ministered to Jesus after the temptation in the wilderness, an angel strengthened Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, an angel rolled away the stone from the tomb of Jesus and angels announced his resurrection at the tomb. b. The work of angels in General. They worship God- Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!" Rev 5:11-12 They assist Gods people- Elijah under the broom tree. Peter in prison, Paul on the ship to Rome. They protect Gods people- Elisha and the chariots of fire. Daniel in lions den, Psalm 91, He shall give His angels charge of thee They execute judgment- Nebuchadnezzar, Herod, Tribulation period etc. IV. Fallen angels. a. The time of the fall- Scripture is silent. b. The cause of the fall- One angels pride, Isaiah 14 c. The number of those who fell- Rev. 13:4 d. The result of the fall- Eph 6:12 Two kingdoms, light and life, death and darkness.
