The phrase has several different meanings. 1. The Word of God as a person: Jesus Christ. Jn 1:1, 1:14 Rev 19:13 These verses describe the Son of God as the Word of God. God the Son has the primary role among the trinity of communicating the character and will of God. 2. The Word of God as speech by God. a. God decrees- Let there be light. Let the earth bring forth the living creature after its kind. b. Gods word of personal address. God speaking directly to people: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses etc. c. Gods word as speech through human lips. The Prophets etc. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him. Deut 18:18 Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me: "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant." Jer 1:9-10 d. Gods word in written form. This is of course what we have in our Bibles. And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written. Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets. Ex 32:15-17 So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law in a book, when they were finished, that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying: "Take this Book of the Law, and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there as a witness against you; Deut 31:24-26 Then Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD. Josh 24:26 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 1 Cor 14:37-38 The written word of God although written by men in human language is still absolutely authoritative and absolutely true to disobey or disbelieve them is to sin against God and bring upon ourselves. II. Why written word? a. More accurate preservation. b. Opportunity for repeated inspection. c. Accessible to many people. Our focus will be on the written word of God. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Josh 1:8 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Ps 1:1-3 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:16-17 III. The Canon of Scripture. a. Word means standard or rule. b. The canon of scripture is a list of all the books that belong in the Bible. A very important issue considering Jesus quotation of Deuteronomy Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 1. The O.T. canon. The Jews received as the word of God those writings that had come to them through those recognized as anointed by God. Prophets, priest, kings. The Old Testament as we have it today was completed around four hundred B.C. When Jesus referred to the Scriptures he referred them as Gods word. Have you not read that which was spoken to you by GodMatt. 22:31 Well did Isaiah prophecy of you hypocritesMark 7:6 2. The Apocrypha- 3. The New Testament Canon. a. When and how did it come about? Marcion-Montanu, mid 2nd Century. b. What was the criterion? 1. Apostolic writing. 2. Apostolic authority. c. As early as the mid-2nd Century most of what we know as the N.T. was already accepted as Scripture. Questionable books The first list of our complete N.T. appeared in a letter from Athanasius in 367. The counsel of Carthage finalized things in 397. CJH*CJ 5CJ$\HI]^;+,d $a$ Z * 9 : 78`a<g>GHI%34QRrsbcv&&'(DE 1h/ =!"#$% i8@8 NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH <A@< Default Paragraph Font.>@.
