The Virgin Birth a. Old Testament prophecy- Genesis 3:15, Isaiah 7:14, Jeremiah 31:22 b. New Testament fulfillment- Matthew 1:18, Luke 1:35 The Doctrinal importance of the Virgin Birth. 1. Salvation must come from the Lord. 2. Virgin Birth made possible the uniting of two natures. 3. Sinless nature of Christ. II. Humanity of Jesus- a. Jesus had a human body: He grew, he became strong, he was weary, thirsty and hungry. b. Jesus had a human mind: He increased in wisdom (Luke 2:52). He learned how to talk, read, and write. He didnТt know the exact time of his return (Mk. 13:32). c. Jesus had a human soul: He experienced a full range of emotions. His soul was troubled (Jn. 12:27). He was sorrowful (Matt. 26:38) He marveled (Matt. 8:10) He wept (Jn. 11:35) III. The Sinlessness of Christ Ц He himself challenged the Pharisees УWhich of you can convict me of sin?Ф (Jn. 8:46) He said, УI always do those things that please the FatherФ. (Jn. 8:29) In Hebrews we are told, УHe was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sinФ. (Heb. 4:15) Peter says concerning Christ, УWho commited no sinЕФ (1Pet.2:22) a. Could Jesus have sinned? Two views: 1. Yes, otherwise temptation couldnТt have been real. 2. No, because Christ was God and God cannot be tempted with evil. b. If you could separate the human and divine nature sin wouldТve been possible. Adam. c. Since Christ was God sin was not possible. d. How was temptation real? Jesus faced temptation not as God but as Man. УMan shall not live by bread aloneФ. IV. The necessity of the full humanity of Jesus. a. Docetism- only an appearance. Jesus wasnТt actually a man. УHe who denies that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is Anti-ChristФ (1Jn. 4:3) 1. Representative obedience- Jesus was our representative and obeyed for us where Adam had failed and disobeyed. 2. Substitute Sacrifice- If Jesus had not been man he could not have died in our place and paid the penalty that was due to us. 3. The One Mediator between God and Men- We needed a man to represent us. 4. Our example and pattern in life- ChristЕ left us an example, Уthat you should in his steps. 5. Pattern for our redeemed bodies- УChange our vile bodies to be like his glorious bodyФ. (Phil 3) 6. Sympathize as High Priest- Hebrews 4:14-16 7. Die and conquer death for man- Hebrews 2:14 )G!
