Paul was an effective missionary- In Thessalonica he led multitudes to Christ, organized a local church, and taught the great doctrines of the Christian Faith. The city- In 315 B.C. the city was named after Thessalonica the sister of Alexander the Great. In Pauls day its population was about 200,000 and its supreme importance lay in that it straddled the Via Egnatia... Its main street was part of the very road which linked Rome with the East. Today the city still remains and is called Thessaloniki. It is the second largest city in Greece next to Athens and has a population of 1000,000. The Letter: I Thessalonians was more than likely the first of all of Pauls epistles and was written to: (1) confirm the young converts in the foundational truths already taught them; (2) to exhort them to a life of holiness pleasing to the Lord; (3) to comfort them concerning those who had died; (4) to instruct them concerning their own hope of the Lords return.
