The number that survive for a 1000 years is minute, yet the Bible, which has been the object of more persecution and opposition than any other book in history, is today at the beginning of the 21st. century, still the worlds number one seller. (Over half a billion distributed last year.) The persecution of Diocletian is but one example of the type of persecution the Scriptures have endured. In A.D. 303, the Roman emperor Diocletian wrote an imperial letter ordering the burning of all Christian Scriptures. The historical irony is that Constantine, the Roman emperor who succeeded Diocletian ordered 50 copies of the Scriptures to be produced by the best scribes at government expense. 2. The historical veracity of the Bible - The late Jewish archaeologist Nelson Glueck declared, It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference. I.e. writing at the time of Moses, The Hittites, Pontus Pilate. After more than two centuries of facing the heaviest scientific guns that could be brought to bear, the Bible has survived- and is perhaps better for the siege. Even on the critics own terms- historical fact- the Scriptures seem more acceptable now than they did when the rationalists began the attack. (Time, Dec 30, 1974) 3. The scientific veracity of the Bible - Though the Bible is not a book of science, no scientific observation in the Bible contradicts known scientific evidence. Every other ancient religion had certain unscientific views of astronomy, medicine, hygiene, etc. The Bible is absolutely free from those scientific absurdities that were common among other religions. 3500 years ago Moses said the life of all flesh is in the blood. Scientist discovered that in the 17th Century. 3000 years ago David said that the sun is moving in a circuit through the heavens. Astronomers discovered that in the early 1900s. 2000 years ago Paul spoke of creation being in the bondage of decay. The 2nd law of thermodynamics was realised in 1850. 4. The unity of the Bible - Although the Bible was written by over 40 different authors, on three different continents, and over a period of sixteen hundred years, the Bible is one book. It has one doctrinal system, one moral standard, one plan of salvation, one program of the ages. It is unparalleled in history in this regard. c. Proof of the Bibles claim to be the Word of God. 1. Predictive prophecy is the built in proof that the Bible is the word of God. Listen to the Lord from Isaiah 46:9-10 For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done.. 2. Prophecy concerning the Jews. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies then know that its desolation is near For these are the day of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. And they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled Luke 21:20-4 3. Prophecy of the Messiah. Hundreds of Messianic prophecies fulfilled by Jesus. (Give some examples.) It is mathematically impossible that these things could have been predicted and fulfilled coincidentally. The only explanation for the fulfillment of these things is that they were given by God, and that Jesus was indeed the one who was to come. 3. Works in those who believe. a. Ps 19:7-11 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward. b. Ps 119: How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. V.9 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! V.11 Your testimonies also are my delight, And my counselors. V.24 This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. V.50 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. Vs. 99-100 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. V. 105 Revive me according to Your word. V. 154 c. Jn 8:31-32 "If you abide in My word you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Inside its pages are the answers to the most important questions of life: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? The message of the Bible centers round the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible has been recognized as a book in a class by itself. Consider the following statements by some notable historical figures: Jean Jacques Rousseau said: I must confess to you that the majesty of the Scriptures astonishes me, the holiness of the evangelists speaks to my heart and has such striking characters of truth, and is, moreover, so perfectly inimitable, that if it had been the invention of men, the inventors would be greater than the greatest heroes. Abraham Lincoln said: All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated through this Book. All the things desirable to man are contained in it. Winston Churchill said: In the words of a forgotten work of Mr. Gladstone, we rest with assurance upon The Impregnable Rock of Holy Scripture. Let men of science and learning expand their knowledge, and probe with their researches, every detail of the records which have been preserved to us from those dim ages. All they will do is to fortify the grand simplicity and essential accuracy of these recorded truths which have so far lighted the pilgrimage of man. Queen Elizabeth II said: To what greater inspiration and counsel can we turn than to the imperishable truth to be found in this treasure house, the Bible? Our text tells us three things about the Bible. 1. It is not the word of man. 2. It is the word of God. 3. It works in those who believe. 1. The Bible is not the word of man. a. How do we know that?
