The New Testament is full of warnings concerning false teachers. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Acts 20:28-31 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. 2 Cor 11:12-15 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron. 1 Tim 4:1-3 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 2 Tim 2:14-18 For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. Titus 1:10-11 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 3-4 Jesus said that the last days would be marked by an abundance of false teachers. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many… For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Matt 24:11, 24 I. How do we identify false teachers? a. According to Jeremiah they speak a vision of their own heart. In other words, their message is inconsistent with and even contradictory to the Scriptures. They deny the authenticity and authority of the Scriptures and put in their place the teachings of men. They deny or distort the Great Doctrines of the Christian Faith: The divinity of Christ, his virgin birth, his sinless life, his miracles, his atoning death, his bodily resurrection, his ascension to the right hand of the father, his second coming. They deny the total depravity of man, and that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone. They reject the idea of a coming judgment and scoff at any mention of a literal hell. “They continually say to those who despise Me, ‘The LORD has said that you shall have peace’, and to everyone who walks according to the imagination of his own heart, no evil shall come upon you”. Jer 23:16-17 b. They live ungodly lives and encourage others to do the same. Again according to Jeremiah they commit adultery and walk in lies; they also strengthen the hands of evildoers. A current example of this is found in Shelby Spong, former Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey. Raised a fundamentalist in North Carolina at a time when the Bible was quoted to justify segregation of the races and opposition to America's civil rights movement, Spong once said that he had grown up a racist, chauvinistic, homophobic, anti-Semite. But eventually he came to believe that "an inerrant, literal view of the Bible obscures truth and destroys faith." As a radical prelate he has challenged traditional church doctrine on human sexuality, the Virgin birth, and the physical nature of Christ's resurrection. In 1987 he urged his church to recognize gay marriages, and in 1989 he shocked many Episcopalians by ordaining an openly gay priest. In the 1990s Spong condoned euthanasia. Bishop Spong told 60 Minutes that his former diocese now had 35 "out-of-the-closet gay and lesbian priests." He has openly declared himself an atheist. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. c. Pride and self-glorification is another mark of false teachers. The apostle John wrote of an evil man named Diotrephes, whom he said, ‘loved to have the preeminence’. Jesus said the false prophets of his day did all their religious activity to be seen by men. d. False teachers are lovers of money. Luke 16:4 says that the Pharisees were lovers of money. Paul said that men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth teach that godliness is a means to financial gain. Peter said, by covetousness they will make merchandise of you. II. How do we respond to these false teachers? a. John said concerning false teachers, do not embrace them as brethren. b. Paul said, from such withdraw yourself. c. Jude said to contend earnestly for the faith. III. How do we contend?
